AHLN Brings MENA Perspectives to Liberal Partnership Days in The Hague

November 8, 2026

The Al Hurriya Liberal Network (AHLN) participated in the Liberal Partnership Days 2025, held in The Hague on November 20–21. Organised by the European Liberal Forum in cooperation with VVD International, the event explored security and democratic resilience through discussions involving political leaders, experts, and international partners.

AHLN was represented by its President, Myrna Mneimneh, who contributed to a session examining post-conflict democracy building in Lebanon and Syria. She joined Rafif Jouejati, Vice President of Ahrar Syria, in a discussion connecting the two countries’ experiences with wider questions about political reconstruction.

Addressing Lebanon’s experience, Mneimneh emphasised the need to strengthen judicial independence, renew the relationship between citizens and the state, and address the influence of armed groups operating outside state authority. Her contribution examined the institutional changes needed to support meaningful democratic reform.

The session also considered the foundations democracy requires beyond elections. Opening remarks by FNF MENA Regional Director Jörg Dehnert highlighted constitutional governance and the rule of law, while the wider exchange addressed inclusive participation, public trust, and institutional legitimacy.

International cooperation was another central theme. Speakers recognised the contribution of European partners while stressing that sustainable democratic change depends on local ownership, civil society, and political leadership within the societies concerned.
